Limited service Reading Room

On 15 October 2012 the renovation of the the public areas of the National Archives will start. The renovation is expected to be completed autumn 2013.

Limited service Reading Room

The renovation will temporarily cause some inconvenience and unfortunately will affect the services we are actually able to offer in the Reading Room.

Alternative Reading Room

In order to minimize the inconvenience as much as possible, there is a fully equipped alternative Reading Room where you can consult records.

The opening hours of this temporary Reading Room are as follows:

  • Tuesday: 10am to 9pm, with all round services
  • Wednesday: 10am to 5pm, with all round services
  • Thursday and Friday: 10am to 5pm, with limited services. On these days, the Information Desk in the Reading Room will be closed. Therefore, there will be no opportunity to make enquiries concerning the contents of the archives collection.

Booking in advance

The temporary reading room has a maximum capacity of 30 places. While reserving a record you automatically reserve a place.

Reserving a place in the reading room is possible as of Saturday 13 October. In the week before it is already possible to make a reservation for a limited number of days after 15 October.

Consultation of archives with restrictions on public accessibility

It is possible to view archives with limited accessibility on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on the sort of limitations. If you wish to consult an archive with restrictions on public accessibility, contact us through e-mail:

Microfilms and microfiches

During the renovation the collection of micorfims and microfiches of the Nationaal Archief can be viewed in the microfilm reading room of the KB, the National Library of the Netherlands. For access to the KB microfilm reading room you need to have a (free) KB reading room pass or a KB year pass. Please note that you must bring personal identification (passport, ID-card or driver's licence) to register for a KB year pass or a KB reading room pass. You can also register on the KB website:


Due to limited space of the temporary reading room it is not possible to consult original maps during the renovation.

Digital services

During the renovation we will improve our digital service by creating new indexes and research guides.
